Important Updates: Salary Placement & Background Check Process
Dear Colleagues,
We are writing to share two important updates regarding hiring practices at our campus:
1. Salary Placement Changes Affecting Classifications with Traditional Salary Ranges - UAPD (Unit 1), APC (Unit 4), Confidential (C99), and MPPs Only
Campus will implement a new approach to salary placement for new hires. Rather than defaulting to the base of the salary range, placement will now be determined based on a candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications, within the framework of established quartiles.
This change is designed to:
- Attract stronger, more experienced candidates.
- Make competitive offers that reflect the value of skills and expertise.
- Reduce time-to-fill and improve consistency across departments.
- Support retention efforts by aligning with market practices
While this approach enhances our ability to recruit top talent, we remain fully committed to maintaining equity for current employees. Every placement decision will continue to undergo HR equity review to ensure fairness and alignment across the campus community.
Please note: These salary placement changes will not affect the following bargaining units: Teamsters (Unit 6), CSUEU (Units 2, 5, 7, 9), or SUPA (Unit 8). Salary placement for these groups will continue to follow the existing guidelines for step placement.
2. Centralization of Background Checks – Effective October 13, 2025
Effective October 13, 2025, background checks and Live Scans for employees, volunteers, and Interns supported by the University Operating Fund will be centralized within Human Resources. Moving forward, HR will be solely responsible for ordering and managing these services (including Live Scan and Accurate)
This centralization will:
- Ensure consistency in compliance with CSU and campus policy.
- Provide a single point of accountability and oversight.
- Streamline processes for departments, saving time and resources.
- Improve tracking and budgeting of related costs.
- Eliminate chargebacks to departments, with all costs now managed centrally by HR.
We appreciate your partnership as these updates take effect. If you have questions about salary placement or background checks, please contact Human Resources at (707) 826-3626.
