Got Sneakers?
The Waste Reduction and Resource Awareness Program (WRRAP) is doing a fundraiser with the company GotSneakers to collect athletic shoes to be recycled. Collection bins will be placed across campus at specific locations so that people can easily drop off shoes. Bins will be emptied weekly.
In the US alone, over 200 million pairs of shoes/sneakers end up in landfills every year. Each shoe can take up to 40 years to decompose in the landfill, emitting harmful chemicals into the soil in the process. This program aims to divert some of these shoes so they can be reused or recycled.
The Got Sneakers program accepts reusable athletic footwear of any brand, size, or measurement. The condition of the shoes does not matter. Shoes with rubber/plastic cleats are accepted, along with shoes like Converse or Vans. It is okay if the insoles or laces are missing. They are NOT accepting any non-athletic footwear, dress shoes, heels/wedges, sandals/flip flops/slides, rain boots, Crocs, water socks, or single shoes (pairs ONLY). No other canvas shoes except for Converse or Vans will be accepted.
