Recent and Intricate Speciation in Amazonia Revealed Through Tree Squirrels

Assistant Professor Silvia Pavan, in collaboration with researchers from the U.S. and Brazil, has just published a new study in Systematic Biology exploring the diversity and speciation of South American tree squirrels (genus Guerlinguetus) using genomic data.

Assistant Professor Silvia Pavan, in collaboration with researchers from the U.S. and Brazil, has just published a new study in Systematic Biology exploring the diversity and speciation of South American tree squirrels (genus Guerlinguetus) using genomic data.

The research reveals unexpectedly high species diversity among these keystone Amazonian mammals and supports the emerging view that much of the region’s species-level diversity is relatively recent, tracing back to the Quaternary period.
