STEM-NET Summer Student Research Program

ABOUT: The STEM-NET Student Summer Research Program supports undergraduate students to work collaboratively with a CSU STEM faculty member on a research project. A goal of STEM-NET is to increase the numbers of CSU students engaging in undergraduate research by broadening opportunities for those yet to participate in this high impact practice. Henceforth, the applicant cannot be financially supported by another program during the summer. In addition, the student must either be a first-generation college student or a Pell grant recipient. STEM-NET is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates the rich tapestry of backgrounds represented across the state of California and its CSU campuses. We encourage applications from all students who are eager to contribute their unique perspectives and skills, aiming to cultivate a diverse community of scholars committed to excellence and research innovation.

NOTE: There is a limit of one student application per faculty member. Faculty and student signatures are required for the application.

Eligibility:

• The student must be a first-generation college student or Pell grant recipient.

• The student is in good academic standing (maintains at least a 2.8 GPA on a 4.0-grade scale) and was enrolled full-time during the spring 2024 semester (quarter) and will be enrolled full-time during the fall 2024 semester (quarter).

• The faculty member must be available to supervise the work for the summer period.

• The awarded funds must support a research project in which the student’s role is clearly defined in the application.

• If the proposed research involves human subjects, it must be submitted concurrently to the

• Institutional Review Board (IRB); projects planning to use animal subjects must apply concurrently to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Funds will only be awarded with appropriate approval(s).

Additional Information and Requirements:

• The student will receive a maximum funding of $3,750 or based on their unmet financial aid need.

• Students must submit a faculty-approved one-page research report at the end of the project.

• Students are required to present results at a virtual meeting at the culmination of the summer. Additionally, students are encouraged to present their work at local, regional and/or national conferences appropriate to their discipline.
