5th Annual California Seaweed Festival

Off Campus Saturday, October 19, 2024, 9am – 5pm 5th Annual California Seaweed Festival Seaweed Celebration will bring fun, food, science, art and industry together in a free and fun public event for all ages. The 5th Annual California Seaweed Festival, the largest seaweed event in North America, is coming to Humboldt Bay October 18-20, 2024.  Moving to a new coastal location each year, the festival celebrates the diversity of local seaweeds, and the ecosystems and people dependent on them.  The main event is a family friendly festival 9:30 AM - 5 PM Saturday October 19th at the Wharfinger Building in Eureka. Everything at the festival, from food and drinks to science presentations, vendors, and workshops, is connected to seaweeds and ocean life. There will be live music, a mermaid, touch tanks and art activities. The Madaket will be taking people out on the Bay to tour aquaculture operations in the water. The main festival is free and open to the public, though some workshops, tours and evening events require tickets. After the main event of Saturday, the California Seaweed Festival hosts a Sustainable Seafood Soirée with makers of the PBS series Hope in the Water (6-9 PM). On Friday, events on the Cal Poly Humboldt campus include a free business planning workshop with California Sea Grant (11 AM - 2 PM) and tours of the Rou Dalagurr Food Sovereignty Lab and Garden (hourly 1-4 PM). Then, we head to the Samoa Peninsula for tours of the shore at low tide, and of aquaculture operations on land. Friday evening, we are thrilled to host the now legendary Seaweed Speakeasy with seaweed beer, seaweed bites and networking at the Humboldt Bay Social Club (6-9 PM).  On Sunday, October 20th, there will be a kelp hatchery workshop at the Telonicher Marine Lab in Trinidad.  The California Seaweed Festival is produced by a small 501c3 nonprofit of the same name, with the purpose of sharing the more than 700 species of seaweed that live in California and the importance of the coastal ecosystems that depend on them. Our core team of 5 and a host of festival volunteers are committed to celebrating all things seaweed in California because we envision a future where people and coastal ecosystems thrive together.
